The team was led by fifth-year head coach Paul Dietzel and played home games at Carolina Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. South Carolina attempted to defend their 1969 ACC title, in their final year in the conference, but were held back by injuries. The Gamecocks compiled an overall record of 4–6–1 with a mark of 3–2–1 in conference play, placing fourth in the ACC. The victory over Clemson left senior quarterback Tommy Suggs with a 3–0 record against the Tigers, which remains the best record any Gamecock quarterback has had in the rivalry.Cruse Josh November 11, 2011 1970: Suggs finishes with a perfect record against Tigers https://www.thecolumbiastar.com/articles/1970-suggs-finishes-with-a-perfect-record-against-tigers/ September 6, 2024 Columbia Star Athletic director and head football coach Paul Dietzel also signed the first black athlete to a football scholarship in 1970, after having mandated the recruitment of black athletes in all sports.2013-09-24 Gamecocks Mourn the Passing of Paul Dietzel https://gamecocksonline.com/news/2013/09/24/gamecocks-mourn-the-passing-of-paul-dietzel/ 2024-09-16 University of South Carolina Athletics en-US Schedule 1970 AP September 12 l y y 17 Georgia Tech Grant Field Atlanta, GA 20–23 51,206 https://www.newspapers.com/article/florida-today-jackets-sting-south-caroli/139360858/ Florida Today Jackets sting South Carolina September 13, 1970 January 22, 2024 Newspapers.com September 19 w Wake Forest Carolina Stadium Columbia, SC 43–7 42,219 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-record-suggs-paces-gamecocks-past-wa/139357168/ The Sunday Record Suggs paces Gamecocks past Wake Forest, 43–7 September 20, 1970 January 22, 2024 Newspapers.com September 26 t y NC State Carter Stadium Raleigh, NC 7–7 25,200 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-herald-sun-underdog-wolfpack-gains-7/139360999/ Durham Morning Herald Underdog Wolfpack gains 7–7 deadlock with South Carolina September 27, 1970 January 22, 2024 Newspapers.com October 3 w y Virginia Tech Carolina Stadium Columbia, SC 24–7 41,563 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/90579862/young-directs-gamecocks-pat-va-tech/ The State Young directs Gamecocks pat Va.
