Entering this season, the ABL would technically see six teams competing in their league throughout the entire season, though they wouldn't be the same six teams throughout the entire season due to the Atlantic City Sandpipers / Sand Snipers (who took over the spot held by the Passaic Red Devils at the time) being replaced by the New York Celtics (who technically would be related to the famous Original Celtics team) when going from the first half of the season to the second half of the season. Not only that, but the Jewels would (technically) end up rebranding themselves from the New York Jewels to their original Brooklyn Jewels name by the time the second half of the season officially began (potentially due to the aforementioned addition of the New York Celtics entering the ABL by the time the second half of the season began), meaning each half-season from this particular split season would be given out by two variations of the same team this time around. In this case, the first half of the season saw the New York Jewels get a below-average 7–10 to get a fourth place finish ahead of only the Paterson Visitations turned Brooklyn Visitations and the winless Atlantic City Sandpipers / Sand Snipers, while the Brooklyn Jewels got an even worse 4–15 record for a last place finish in the second half of the season. As such, not only would the Jewels fail to qualify for the ABL's championship series for this season, but the team would end up moving away from Brooklyn, New York into New Haven, Connecticut for at least the start of their upcoming season in the ABL. Roster Due to information on American Basketball League players being generally hard to find, there are bound to be more gaps and/or inaccuracies found in certain areas on the team's roster spots than usual.1936-37 New York Jewels (ABL) en peachbasketsociety.blogspot.com Mike Wilk 2026-10-09 https://peachbasketsociety.blogspot.com/2018/02/1936-37-new-york-jewels-abl.html1936 Brooklyn Jewels basketball Statistics en StatsCrew 2026-10-09 2026-10-09 https://www.statscrew.com/basketball/roster/t-ABLBRJ/y-1936 1936–37 New York / Brooklyn Jewels #0953a0 #FFFFFF #ff7518 #FFFFFF Matty Begovich 1 F/C 6 5 205 St. John's 1910-10-02 Jules Bender G 5 11 160 Long Island University 1914-04-02 Lou Bender 1 F 6 1 175 Columbia 1910-03-08 Moe Dubilier 1 G/F 6 2 210 John Marshall University 1915-02-20 Rip Gerson 1 F 5 10 165 St. John's 1906-04-06 George Goldsmith basketball 1 G 5 9 155 CCNY 1914-04-21 Murray Heilweil 1 C 6 3 180 St. John's 1911-05-01 Mac Kinsbrunner 1 G/F 5 9 155 St. John's 1909-03-21 Ben Kramer F 6 1 195 Long Island University 1913-05-03 Mickey Kupperberg 1 G 5 11 185 Minnesota 1914-03-17 Venty Lieb 1 G 5 9 160 NYU 1912-04-18 Leo Merson 1 F 6 2 175 Long Island University 1915-04-30 Ken Norton basketball 1 F 6 2 200 Long Island University 1914-05-07 Jake Pelkington C/F 6 6 220 Manhattan 1916-01-03 Mac Posnack 1 G 5 11 195 St. John's 1909-06-23 Honey Russell G/F 5 11 175 St. John's 1911-09-10 Allie Schuckman 1 G/F 5 8 155 St. John's 1907-11-25 Willie Schwartz basketball 1 G 6 0 195 Cornell 1911-04-06 George Slott 1 G/F 5 11 185 St. John's 1912-06-09 Sam Winograd 1 F 6 0 200 CCNY 1913-11-28 Eddie Wilde American Basketball League Standings +First HalfTeamWinsLossesWinning %Jersey Reds144.778Philadelphia SPHAs / Hebrews126.667Kingston Colonials116.647New York JewelsNote1 a a710.412Paterson Visitations / Brooklyn VisitationsNote1 b b412.250Atlantic City Sandpipers / Sand SnipersNote1 c c010.000 +Second HalfTeamWinsLossesWinning %Philadelphia SPHAs / Hebrews146.700Jersey Reds128.600Brooklyn VisitationsNote1 b b109.526New York (Original) CelticsNote1 d d1010.500Kingston Colonials911.450Brooklyn JewelsNote1 a a415.211 Notes Note1 a a Originally, the New York Jewels played as the New York Jewels for the first half of the season. However, by the start of the second half of the season, the team would rebrand themselves to the Brooklyn Jewels (likely because of the inclusion of the New York (Original) Celtics for the second half of the season following the departure of the Atlantic City Sandpipers / Sand Snipers near the end of the first half of the season) for the rest of that season only going forward.Team Standings by Year https://probasketballencyclopedia.com/team-standings-by-year/?y=1936-1937&t=New%20York%20Jewels Pro Basketball Encyclopedia Note1 b b The Brooklyn Visitations originally moved from Brooklyn, New York to Paterson, New Jersey to become the Paterson Visitations early on before the first half of the season began.
