The Cougars were led by first-year head coach John Jenkins and played their home games at the Houston Astrodome in Houston, Texas. The team competed as members of the Southwest Conference, finishing in second. Due to NCAA sanctions, Houston was ineligible to be invited to a bowl game and was banned from being ranked in the Coaches Poll, although this year the Cougars were on television. The Cougars lost only once in the season, to eventual SWC champion, Texas, and were ranked tenth in the final AP poll of the year. Their last regular season game was played in Tokyo, in the Coca-Cola Classic. Quarterback David Klingler finished third in voting for the Heisman Trophy, leading the nation with 54 passing touchdowns and 374 completions. His 5,140 passing yards trailed only Heisman-winner Ty Detmer of BYU.https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/1990-leaders.html# 1990 College Football Leaders Sports-Reference.com Schedule 1990 AP September 8 w y 24 UNLV Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 37–9 20,138 https://www.newspapers.com/article/fort-worth-star-telegram-high-powered-ho/190134649/ Fort Worth Star-Telegram High-powered Houston offense rolls behind new leaders September 9, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com September 13 Thursday w y 18 Texas Tech Jones Stadium Lubbock, TX rivalry ESPN 51–35 36,794 https://www.newspapers.com/article/tyler-morning-telegraph-cougars-blast-te/190134769/ Tyler Morning Telegraph Cougars blast Tech September 14, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com September 29 w 13 Rice Houston Astrodome Houston, TX rivalry 24–22 24,130 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-atlanta-constitution-houstons-late/190134920/ The Atlanta Journal & Constitution Houston's late field goal knocks down Rice 24–22 September 30, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com October 6 w y 13 Baylor Floyd Casey Stadium Waco, TX rivalry Raycom 31–15 36,289 https://www.newspapers.com/article/austin-american-statesman/132990218/ Austin American-Statesman No. 13 Houston coasts by Baylor October 7, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com October 13 w 12 Texas A&M 20 Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 36–31 45,141 https://www.newspapers.com/article/corpus-christi-caller-times-no-12-houst/190135162/ Corpus Christi Caller-Times No. 12 Houston nips A&M, 36–31 October 14, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com October 20 w y 9 SMU Ownby Stadium University Park, TX rivalry 44–17 23,250 https://www.newspapers.com/article/san-antonio-light-houston-rolls-but-smu/190135260/ San Antonio Light Houston rolls, but SMU reclaims some pride October 21, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com October 27 w 6 Arkansas Houston Astrodome Houston, TX Raycom 62–28 27,352 https://www.newspapers.com/article/san-angelo-standard-times-uh-compounds-a/190135395/ San Angelo Standard-Times UH compounds Arkansas' woes October 28, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com November 3 w y 6 TCU Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 56–35 25,725 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-houston-post-coogs-frogs-197-yards/190135483/ The Houston Post Coogs, Frogs 197 yards shy of mile November 4, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com November 10 l y 3 Texas 14 Texas Memorial Stadium Austin, TX ESPN 24–45 82,457 https://www.newspapers.com/article/victoria-advocate-texas-blitzes-cougars/190133794/ The Victoria Advocate Texas blitzes Cougars, 45–24 November 11, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com November 17 w y 12 Eastern Washington Houston Astrodome Houston, TX 84–21 17,050 https://www.newspapers.com/article/fort-worth-star-telegram-klinglers-11-t/162512977/ Fort Worth Star-Telegram Klingler's 11 touchdown passes pace Houston's record-setting rout November 18, 1990 January 7, 2025 Newspapers.com December 2 Sunday w y y 11 Arizona State Tokyo Dome Tokyo, Japan Coca-Cola Classic TBS 62–45 50,000 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/116756104/houston-has-fun-at-asus-expense/ The Arizona Republic Houston has fun at ASU's expense December 2, 1990 January 29, 2026 Newspapers.com https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/houston/1990-schedule.html 1990 Houston Cougars Schedule and Results Sports-Reference.com August 2, 2018 Rankings 1990 NCAA Division I-A football rankings AP 0 15 24 24 18 14 13 13 12 9 6 (1) 6 (2) 3 (5) 12 12 11 9 10 Coaches 0 0 Game summaries UNLV UNLV Rebels football At Texas Tech 1990 Texas Tech Red Raiders football team Houston 51, Texas Tech 35 https://www.upi.com/Archives/1990/09/14/Houston-51-Texas-Tech-35/3536653284800/ UPI September 14, 1990 September 2, 2019 Rice Rice Owls football Bayou Bucket Classic At Baylor 1990 Baylor Bears football team Texas A&M Texas A&M at Houston No. 20 Aggies 17 7 7 0 No. 12 Cougars 7 10 10 9 October 13 Astrodome, Houston, Texas 45,141 Indoors 1 A&M Darren Lewis 47-yard run (Talbot kick) A&M 7–0 yes 1 A&M Layne Talbot 33-yard field goal A&M 10–0 1 5:16 A&M Darren Lewis 9-yard run (Talbot kick) A&M 17–0 1 2:40 HOU Manny Hazard 14-yard pass from David Klingler (Anderson kick) A&M 17–7 2 A&M Darren Lewis 4-yard run (Talbot kick) A&M 24–7 2 HOU Chuck Weatherspoon 1-yard run (Anderson kick) A&M 24–14 2 0:00 HOU Roman Anderson 39-yard field goal A&M 24–17 3 HOU David Klingler 1-yard run (Anderson kick) Tied 24–24 3 6:40 HOU Roman Anderson 23-yard field goal Houston 27–24 3 A&M Darren Lewis 12-yard run (Talbot kick) A&M 31–27 4 12:33 HOU Roman Anderson 34-yard field goal A&M 31–30 4 0:20 HOU Chuck Weatherspoon 1-yard run (pass failed) Houston 36–31 yes 1990 Texas A&M Aggies football team The Cougars drove 95 yards for the game-winning touchdown, a 1-yard run by Chuck Weatherspoon with 20 seconds remaining.
