Overview
Several theories were made as to the origin of the sightings - from it being a meteoroid to a UFO. Initially, the most prominent theory was that it was an old artificial satellite (i.e. a large piece of space junk) re-entering the atmosphere.http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/fireball-in-sky-above-sheffield-believed-to-be-space-junk-1-4957584 Fireball in sky above Sheffield believed to be 'space junk' 27 September 2012 The Star https://web.archive.org/web/20121014175839/http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/fireball-in-sky-above-sheffield-believed-to-be-space-junk-1-4957584 2012-10-14 live https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-19683728 'Meteor shower' over Northern Ireland 'space junk' 22 September 2012 BBC News https://web.archive.org/web/20120923235849/http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-19683728 2012-09-23 live However, later analysis showed that it was highly unlikely to be space junk; it travelled too fast, towards the slow end of the range of possible meteor speedshttp://sattrackcam.blogspot.nl/2012/09/more-on-21-september-2012-fireball-why.html More on the 21 September 2012 fireball: why it definitely was a meteor 24 September 2012 https://web.archive.org/web/20120927171349/http://sattrackcam.blogspot.nl/2012/09/more-on-21-september-2012-fireball-why.html 2012-09-27 live and, in addition, it traversed the sky from east to west while almost all satellites orbit from west to east or north and south.http://sattrackcam.blogspot.nl/2012/09/fireball-over-n-europe-on-21-september.html Fireball over N-Europe on 21 September 2012, 21:45 GMT was likely NOT a reentry 22 September 2012 https://web.archive.org/web/20120925233007/http://sattrackcam.blogspot.nl/2012/09/fireball-over-n-europe-on-21-september.html 2012-09-25 live
According to Finnish mathematician Esko Lyytinen, the meteor was captured by Earth's gravity and entered the atmosphere once again above USA and Canada 155 minutes later.http://lunarmeteoritehunters.blogspot.fi/2012/09/breaking-news-uk-earth-hugging-asteroid.html Breaking News - UK Earth-hugging Asteroid Circled the Earth and Hit Again 28 September 2012 Esko Lyytinen LunarMeteorite Hunter https://web.archive.org/web/20130512182307/http://lunarmeteoritehunters.blogspot.fi/2012/09/breaking-news-uk-earth-hugging-asteroid.html 2013-05-12 live If confirmed, this would classify it as an Earth-grazing meteor.
