Eight teams took part, each playing each other once. The Soviets became world champions for the fifth time, winning all of their games. This also counted as their ninth European title, with the Czechs finishing second and the Swedes third. For the third straight year Canada finished fourth. The tournament employed new tie-breaking rules, which some believed were supposed to be in place for the Innsbruck Olympics. To decide medals priority would be given to the team who won the head-to-head game, unless they tied, or more than two teams were tied. In those two cases goal differential would be used, but only the goal differential between the top four teams. Fifteen nations played in two groups, with qualification games used to establish the tier for closely ranked teams. From now on, the last place team in group 'A' would be relegated, with the group 'B' champion being promoted to replace them. Poland went undefeated to earn promotion, defeating the Swiss, and tying the West Germans. The event was the first Ice Hockey World Championships hosted by Finland, and was organized by Harry Lindblad, president of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association.http://www.legendsofhockey.net/IZone/izone.member.info.do?mem=75 2.75 Harry Lindblad Legends of Hockey Hockey Hall of Fame 2019-02-28http://www.leijonat.fi/index.php/fanit/item/14189-milestones-of-finnish-ice-hockey Milestones of Finnish Ice Hockey Leijonat 2019-03-01 2 March 2019 https://web.archive.org/web/20190302024953/http://www.leijonat.fi/index.php/fanit/item/14189-milestones-of-finnish-ice-hockey dead Qualifying round Group A First round #eeeeee 18 December 1964 FRG 2–8 SUI #eeeeee 20 December 1964 FRG 7–2 SUI #eeeeee 3 January 1965 SUI 6–7 FRG Second round #eeeeee 2 March 1965 NOR 5–4 FRG Qualified for Group A: NORQualified for Group B: SUI, FRG World Championship Group A (Tampere, Finland) right|thumb|300px|Yle sports commentator booth in Hakametsä 1965. main WDL R 2 URS URS CSK CSK SWE SWE CAN CAN DDR DDR USA USA FIN FIN NOR NOR 7 0 0 51 13 6 0 1 43 10 4 1 2 33 17 4 0 3 28 21 3 0 4 18 33 2 0 5 22 44 1 1 5 14 27 0 0 7 12 56 red1 R complete Norway was relegated to 1966 Group B. #eeeeee 4 March SWE 5–2 USA #eeeeee 4 March URS 8–4 FIN #eeeeee 4 March CSK 5–1 DDR #eeeeee 5 March SWE 5–1 DDR #eeeeee 5 March FIN 0–4 CAN #eeeeee 5 March NOR 2–14 URS #eeeeee 6 March USA 0–12 CSK #eeeeee 6 March CAN 6–0 NOR #eeeeee 7 March FIN 2–2 SWE #eeeeee 7 March CAN 5–2 USA #eeeeee 7 March URS 8–0 DDR #eeeeee 8 March CSK 9–2 NOR #eeeeee 9 March FIN 4–1 NOR #eeeeee 9 March DDR 7–4 USA #eeeeee 10 March URS 5–3 SWE #eeeeee 10 March CAN 8–1 DDR #eeeeee 10 March FIN 2–5 CSK #eeeeee 11 March SWE 10–0 NOR #eeeeee 11 March CSK 8–0 CAN #eeeeee 11 March USA 2–9 URS #eeeeee 12 March USA 4–0 FIN #eeeeee 12 March DDR 5–1 NOR #eeeeee 13 March SWE 6–4 CAN #eeeeee 13 March FIN 2–3 DDR #eeeeee 13 March URS 3–1 CSK #eeeeee 14 March CSK 3–2 SWE #eeeeee 14 March CAN 1–4 URS #eeeeee 14 March USA 8–6 NOR Qualifying round Group B #eeeeee 19 November 1964 ITA 2–3 HUN #eeeeee 26 November 1964 HUN 2–2 ITA #eeeeee 5 December 1964 GBR 8–2 FRA #eeeeee 12 December 1964 FRA 3–2 GBR Qualified for Group B: HUN,GBRTeams in 1966 Group B qualification: FRA,ITA World Championship Group B (Turku, Rauma, and Pori, Finland) main WDL Q 2 POL POL SUI SUI FRG FRG HUN HUN AUT AUT GBR GBR YUG YUG ROU ROU X 5 1 0 35 15 4 1 1 27 15 3 2 1 30 20 2 1 3 19 24 2 0 4 21 28 1 1 4 24 41 0 2 4 16 29 0 0 0 0 0 #ccffcc A inherit Did not participate X complete Poland earned promotion to the 1966 Group A.
