American college football season February 2026 August 2023 1960 Oregon Ducks football Independent 7–3–1 Len Casanova 10th Dave Urell Dave Grosz Hayward Field, Multnomah Stadium Liberty Bowl L 12–41 vs. Penn State The 1960 Oregon Ducks football team represented the University of Oregon as an independent during the 1960 college football season. In their 10th season under head coach Len Casanova, the Ducks compiled a 7–3–1 record and outscored their opponents, 206 to 130. The team played home games at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon and Multnomah Stadium in Portland, Oregon. Days before the team would play their game against the University of Michigan, some key fixers in David Budin and Frank Rosenthal would get caught trying and failing to bribe halfback Michael "Mickey" Bruce to join in on what later became known as the 1961 NCAA University Division men's basketball gambling scandal by offering Bruce thousands of dollars for certain stipulations at hand, including recruiting his teammate in quarterback Dave Grosz to join him in the scheme also, with a hundred dollars being given to Bruce per week for the entire season afterward had he accepted the offer in order to keep the gamblers informed in the team's physical status throughout the season.Figone Albert Cheating the Spread: Gamblers, Point Shavers, and Game Fixers in College Football and Basketball University of Illinois Press 2012 9780252037283 Urbana 102Dooley Greg August 4, 2023 The Duck Bribe of 1960 https://mvictors.com/the-duck-bribe-of-1960/ June 6, 2024 MVictors.com - Michigan Football History en-US However, due to the bribers being caught in their attempt to rig college football games alongside college basketball games, the game would continue as planned with no rigging involved (though Bruce would later testify against the fixers in court in order to maintain his innocence). The team's statistical leaders included Dave Grosz with 910 passing yards, Dave Grayson with 631 rushing yards, and Cleveland Jones with 402 receiving yards.1960 Oregon Ducks Stats Sports Reference LLC SR/College Football September 7, 2016 https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/oregon/1960.html Schedule 1960 AP Pacific September 17 1:30 p.m. w Idaho Hayward Field Eugene, OR 33–6 13,200 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-fresno-bee-grosz-jones-star-as-duck/189644104/ The Fresno Bee Grosz, Jones star as Ducks crush Vandals September 18, 1960 January 23, 2026 Newspapers.com September 24 l y Michigan Michigan Stadium Ann Arbor, MI 0–21 48,021 But M Comes Through, 21–0 Detroit Free Press Bob Pille September 25, 1960 D1, D3 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/47452057/but-m-comes-through-21-0/ Newspapers.com October 1 w y Utah Ute Stadium Salt Lake City, UT 20–17 23,653 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-sacramento-bee-fleet-duck-backs-beat/171297657/ The Sacramento Bee Fleet Duck backs beat Utah 20 to 17 October 2, 1960 April 28, 2025 Newspapers.com October 8 w San Jose State Hayward Field Eugene, OR 33–0 10,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-los-angeles-times-grosz-directs-duck/189644249/ The Los Angeles Times Grosz directs Duck victory over Spartans October 9, 1960 January 23, 2026 Newspapers.com October 15 w Washington State Hayward Field Eugene, OR 21–12 18,500 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-times-news-ducks-nip-wsu-2112-in-wa/189642221/ The Times-News Ducks nip WSU 21–12 in waning minutes October 16, 1960 January 23, 2026 Newspapers.com October 22 w y California California Memorial Stadium Berkeley, CA 20–0 36,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-san-francisco-examiner-oregon-throws/189639688/ The San Francisco Examiner Oregon throws Bears for 1st shutout, 20–0 October 23, 1960 January 23, 2026 Newspapers.com October 29 l y Washington 9 Husky Stadium Seattle, WA rivalry 6–7 55,235 https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=THApAAAAIBAJ&sjid=lecDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6667%2C5462092 The Spokesman-Review Associated Press Washington nips Webfoots, 7–6, on Hivner-McKeta pass October 30, 1960 2, sports November 5 w Stanford Multnomah Stadium Portland, OR 27–6 18,727 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-los-angeles-times-grosz-makes-duck-s/189641690/ The Los Angeles Times Grosz makes Duck soup of Stanford, 27–6 November 6, 1960 January 23, 2026 Newspapers.com November 12 w West Virginia Multnomah Stadium Portland, OR 20–6 11,864 https://www.newspapers.com/article/herald-and-news-fast-oregon-beats-tough/139109805/ Herald and News Fast Oregon beats tough W.
