It was a bicycle race which consisted of 20 stages over 3425 km mi on, ridden at an average speed of 38.506 km/h mph on. Sean Kelly started the race as the principal favourite after performance in the 1987 Vuelta a España in which he was leading the General classification with several days remaining in the race when he was forced to withdraw due to injury. Luis "Lucho" Herrera returned to defend his title while 1985 Vuelta winner Pedro Delgado had decided to ride the 1988 Giro d'Italia in preparation for the 1988 Tour de France. The BH team directed by Javier Mínguez, presented solid opposition with the strong climbers Álvaro Pino (winner of the 1986 Vuelta a España) and Anselmo Fuerte. In the end, Kelly won the race and became the first Irish winner of the Vuelta a España, completing a hat-trick of consecutive Irish Grand Tour victories: Stephen Roche having won the 1987 Giro d'Italia and the 1987 Tour de France.http://hemeroteca-paginas.mundodeportivo.com/EMD01/HEM/1988/05/16/MD19880516-052.pdf Clasificaciones es 16 May 1988 52 El Mundo Deportivo El Mundo Deportivo S.A. 27 May 2012 PDF Classifications https://web.archive.org/web/20180830073947/http://hemeroteca-paginas.mundodeportivo.com/EMD01/HEM/1988/05/16/MD19880516-052.pdf 30 August 2018 live Route The first stage introduced an innovative format of five heats, each with two riders per team, with the team leaders appearing in the final heat.Una primera etapa innovadora produjo el desconcierto en el pelotón de la Vuelta – Robert Álvarez, El País, 26 April 1988 +List of stageshttps://www.procyclingstats.com/race/vuelta-a-espana/1988/stage-21/overview 1988 » 43rd Vuelta a Espana Procyclingstats 26 July 2018http://www.memoire-du-cyclisme.net/eta_tde/tde1988.php 43ème Vuelta a España 1988 Memoire du cyclisme fr https://web.archive.org/web/20041025140603/http://www.memoire-du-cyclisme.net/eta_tde/tde1988.php 25 October 2004 Stage Date Course Distance Type Winner 1 25 AprilSanta Cruz de Tenerife 17.4 km mi on 22px Individual time trialEttore Pastorelli ITA 2 26 AprilSan Cristóbal de La Laguna to Santa Cruz de Tenerife 210 km mi onIñaki Gastón ESP 3 27 AprilLas Palmas to Las Palmas 34 km mi on 22px Team time trial ZOR 1988 4 28 AprilAlcalá del Río to Badajoz 210 km mi onMathieu Hermans NED 5 29 AprilBadajoz to Béjar 234 km mi onFrancisco Navarro ESP 6 30 AprilBéjar to Valladolid 202 km mi onMathieu Hermans NED 7 1 MayValladolid to León 160 km mi onMathieu Hermans NED 8 2 MayLeón to Valgrande-Pajares Brañillín es Valgrande-Pajares 176.7 km mi onÁlvaro Pino ESP 9 3 MayOviedo to Monte Naranco 6.8 km mi on 22px Individual time trialÁlvaro Pino ESP 10 4 MayOviedo to Santander 197.3 km mi onMathieu Hermans NED 11 5 MaySantander to Valdezcaray 217.2 km mi onSean Kelly IRL 12 6 MayLogroño to Jaca 197.5 km mi onSean Yates GBR 13 7 MayJaca to Cerler 178.2 km mi onFabio Parra COL 14 8 MayBenasque to Andorra 190.3 km mi onIñaki Gastón ESP 15 9 MayLa Seu d'Urgell to Sant Quirze del Vallès 166 km mi onJohnny Weltz DEN 16 10 MayValencia to Albacete 192 km mi onMathieu Hermans NED 17 11 MayAlbacete to Toledo 244.4 km mi onMalcolm Elliott GBR 18 12 MayToledo to Ávila 212.5 km mi onJuan Martínez Oliver ESP 19 13 MayÁvila to Segovia 150 km mi onÁngel Ocaña ESP 20 14 MayLas Rozas to Villalba 30 km mi on 22px Individual time trialSean Kelly IRL 21 15 MayVillalba to Madrid 202 km mi onMathieu Hermans NED Total 3,425 km mi on Results Final General classification RankRiderTeamTime1 IRE Sean Kelly Kas-Mavic 89h 19' 23"2GER Reimund Dietzen Teka-Mavi-Alanc + 1' 27" 3ESP Anselmo Fuerte ZOR 1988+ 1' 29"4ESP Laudelino Cubino ZOR 1988+ 2' 17" 5 COL Fabio Parra Pinto Kelme + 2' 25"6GBR Robert Millar Fagor-MBK + 3' 22"7 ESP Jesús Blanco Villar Teka-Mavi-Alanc + 8' 19"8ESP Álvaro Pino ZOR 1988+ 8' 25"9 BEL Eddy Schepers Fagor-MBK + 9' 45"10 ESP Roberto Córdoba Asensi ZOR 1988+ 10' 28"11FRA Éric Caritoux Kas-Mavic 12COL William Palacio Navarro Reynolds-Pinarello 13ESP Federico Echave Musatadi ZOR 1988 14ESP Jokin Mújika Aramburu Artiach 1988 15ITA Franco Votolo CAR 1988 16 COL Martín Ramírez Café de Colombia 17ESP José Luis Laguía Reynolds-Pinarello 18ESP Mariano Sanchez Martinez Teka-Mavi-Alanc 19IRE Martin Earley Kas-Mavic 20COL Luis Herrera Café de Colombia 21COL Carlos Jaramillo Postobón 22NED Luc Suykerbuyk ZAH 1988 23ESP Pello Ruiz Cabestany Kas-Mavic 24ESP Vicente Ridaura Artiach 1988 25ESP Juan Tomas Martinez Gutierrez ZAH 1988 KOM Classification CyclistTeamPoints1ESP Álvaro PinoBH1002ESP Anselmo FuerteBH623IRE Sean KellyKAS60 Points Classification CyclistTeamPoints1IRE Sean KellyKAS2482NED Mathieu HermansCAJ1663BEL Benny Van BrabantZAH138 Team classification TeamCountryTime1ZOR 1988Spain- Best First Year Professional CyclistTeamTime1ESP Carlos Muñiz MenéndezCLAS References External links Race website 1988 Vuelta a España 1 11 12 21 1988 Category:1988 in Spanish road cycling Category:April 1988 sports events in Europe Category:May 1988 sports events in Europe
