1976 Davis Cup

1976 edition of the Davis Cup 1976 Davis Cup 22 August 1975 – 19 December 1976 65th 53 ITA 1975 1977 The 1976 Davis Cup was the 65th edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 58 teams would enter the competition, 32 in the Europe Zone, 14 in the Americas Zone, and 12 in the Eastern Zone. This year's tournament saw all teams in the Americas Zone competing in one single bracket, with the previous North & Central America and South America sub-zones, and subsequently the Americas Inter-Zonal final, being eliminated. This brought the Americas Zone in line with the outline of the other zones, with the previous year's Americas sub-zone champions progressing to the new Americas main draw semifinals. Chile defeated South Africa in the Americas Zone final, Australia defeated New Zealand in the Eastern Zone final, and the Soviet Union and Italy were the winners of the two Europe Zones, defeating Hungary and Great Britain, respectively. In the Inter-Zonal Zone, Italy defeated Australia in their semifinal; the second semifinal was scratched and Chile advanced to the Final as the Soviet Union refused to travel to Chile due to their opposition to the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. In the final, held in the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile, on 17–19 December, Italy defeated Chile to win their first title and become the seventh nation to win the Davis Cup.Bud Collins The Bud Collins History of Tennis 2010 New Chapter Press [New York] 978-0942257700 495–496, 499 2nd Americas Zone 1976 Davis Cup Americas Zone Preliminary rounds 2 y 26 September–9 November 1975 17 October–21 December 1975 First Round Qualifying Round 14 USA bye VEN 1930 bye Mexico City, Mexico (clay) MEX 5 Caribbean/West Indies 0 Montreal, Canada (indoor carpet) CAN 5 COL 0 BRA 1968 w/o BOL Lima, Peru PER 3 URU 2 bye ECU 1900 bye ARG Tucson, AZ, United States (hard) USA 5 VEN 1930 0 Mexico City, Mexico (clay) MEX 3 CAN 2 Brasília, Brazil (clay) BRA 1968 5 PER 0 Guayaquil, Ecuador (clay) ECU 1900 0 ARG 5 Main Draw 19–28 December 1975 5–7 March 26–28 April RSA 1928 bye Mexico City, Mexico (clay) USA 2 MEX 3 Buenos Aires, Argentina (clay) BRA 1968 0 ARG 5 bye CHI RSA 1928 w/o MEX Santiago, Chile (clay) ARG 2 CHI 3 Santiago, Chile RSA 1928 2 CHI 3 Final Chile vs. South Africa Chile South Africa 1928 Santiago, Chilehttps://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx?id=M-DC-1976-AME-M-CHI-RSA-01 Chile v South Africa daviscup.com 26–28 April 1976 3 2 Patricio Cornejo 4 6 5 5 Bernard Mitton 6 3 7 7 Jaime Fillol 7 8 6 Raymond Moore 5 6 3 Patricio Cornejo Jaime Fillol 6 10 2 4 3 Byron Bertram Frew McMillan 3 8 6 6 6 Patricio Cornejo 5 6 10 7 Raymond Moore 7 2 8 5 Jaime Fillol 7 6 4 6 Bernard Mitton 5 3 6 2 Eastern Zone 1976 Davis Cup Eastern Zone Preliminary rounds 2 y 26–28 September 1975 30 September–1 October 1975 First Round Qualifying Round INA bye KOR 1949 bye SRI bye Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia MAS 0 PAK 5 Amritsar, India IND 5 THA 0 bye JPN 1947 bye PHI 1936 bye TPE Jakarta, Indonesia INA 3 KOR 1949 2 Colombo, Sri Lanka (clay) SRI 0 PAK 4 Tokyo, Japan IND 3 JPN 1947 2 Taipei, Taiwan (hard) PHI 1936 4 TPE 0 Main Draw 28 November–21 December 1975 9–18 January 27 February–1 March AUS bye Karachi, Pakistan INA 4 PAK 1 Manila, Philippines IND 4 PHI 1936 0 bye NZL Hobart, Australia (grass) AUS 5 INA 0 Auckland, New Zealand (grass) IND 2 NZL 3 Brisbane, Australia (grass) AUS 3 NZL 1 Final Australia vs. New Zealand Australia New Zealand Milton Courts, Brisbane, Australiahttps://www.daviscup.com/en/draws-results/tie.aspx?id=M-DC-1976-EAS-M-AUS-NZL-01 Australia v New Zealand daviscup.com 27 February–1 March 1976 Grass 3 1 Ross Case 6 8 1 6 4 Brian Fairlie 3 10 6 2 6 John Newcombe 8 6 7 Onny Parun 6 3 5 John Newcombe Tony Roche 6 3 6 7 Brian Fairlie Onny Parun 1 6 3 5 John Newcombe 8 5 11 6 Brian Fairlie 6 7 9 3 Ross Case Onny Parun Europe Zone 1976 Davis Cup Europe Zone Zone A Pre-qualifying round Pre-qualifying round TUR ISR w/o Preliminary rounds 2 y 26 September–4 October 1975 1–4 January;
