Background
List of California wildfires
The timing of "fire season" in California is variable, depending on the amount of prior winter and spring precipitation, the frequency and severity of weather such as heat waves and wind events, and moisture content in vegetation. Northern California typically sees wildfire activity between late spring and early fall, peaking in the summer with hotter and drier conditions. Occasional cold frontal passages can bring wind and lightning. The timing of fire season in Southern California is similar, peaking between late spring and fall. The severity and duration of peak activity in either part of the state is modulated in part by weather events: downslope/offshore wind events can lead to critical fire weather, while onshore flow and Pacific weather systems can bring conditions that hamper wildfire growth.Weather: Fire Season Climatology (Northern California) https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms437/weather/fire-season-climatology#TOC-Northern-California June 25, 2024 National Wildfire Coordinating Group April 25, 2024 May 13, 2021 https://web.archive.org/web/20210513095421/https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms437/weather/fire-season-climatology#TOC-Northern-California liveToohey Grace June 22, 2024 California wildfires have already burned 90,000 acres, and summer is just beginning https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-06-22/spring-wildfire-sees-a-boom-concerning-for-rest-of-year June 25, 2024 Los Angeles Times June 25, 2024 https://web.archive.org/web/20240625010426/https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-06-22/spring-wildfire-sees-a-boom-concerning-for-rest-of-year live

NameCountyAcresStart dateContainment dateContainment means that fire crews have established and secured control lines around the fire's perimeter. These lines are artificial barriers, like trenches or cleared vegetation, designed to stop the fire's spread, or natural barriers like rivers. Containment reflects progress in managing the fire but does not necessarily mean the fire is starved of fuel, under control, or put out.KCAL-TV Los Angeles What containment and other wildfire related terms mean September 12, 2024 https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/what-does-containment-mean-wildfire-evacuation-warning-order-red-flag/ 2025-07-25NotesRefTown Glenn1,5002000 March 312000 April 5Caused by an escaped controlled burnCabbage Mendocino 1,540 2000 April 1 2000 April 5 April 5, 2000 Fire nearly contained Oakland Tribune https://www.newspapers.com/clip/116179761/fire-nearly-contained/ January 10, 2023 Newspapers.comBerryessa Napa 5,731 2000 June 13 2000 June 16Caused by equipment use; destroyed 15 structuresBarrett San Diego 2,000 2000 June 29 2000 June 30June 30, 2000 Rural Residents Flee Wildfire Along U.S.-Mexico Border Los Angeles Times Associated Press https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-jun-30-mn-46385-story.html January 10, 2022Granite Mariposa 2,000 2000 July 2 2000 July 4 Caused by shootingGoat Lassen 1,084 2000 July 17 2000 July 20Caused by a campfireBark Siskiyou 1,715 2000 July 21 2000 July 26Shell San Luis Obispo 6,300 2000 July 22 Plaskett II Monterey 5,830 2000 July 22 2000 August 1Caused by camper trying to light a stoveJuly 24, 2000 Fire burns almost 500 acres in national forest Tulare Advance-Register Associated Press https://www.newspapers.com/clip/116178801/fire-burns-almost-500-acres-in-national/ January 10, 2023 Newspapers.comNemeth Mike August 2, 2000 Firefighters gain upper hand over Sur blaze The Salinas Californian https://www.newspapers.com/clip/116179195/firefighters-gain-upper-hand-over-sur-bl/ January 10, 2023 Newspapers.comHappy Camp Inyo 5,500 2000 July 23 2000 July 28Manter Tulare 74,439 2000 July 24 2000 August 9At the time the largest recorded fire in Sequoia National Forest; destroyed 15 structuresGold Scott Gorman Tom August 2, 2000 Sequoia Forest Fire Burns 67,348 Acres Los Angeles Times https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-aug-02-mn-63017-story.html live January 10, 2023 https://web.archive.org/web/20230110180553/https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-aug-02-mn-63017-story.html January 10, 2023Morgan Lake 3,283 2000 July 26 2000 July 27Rapaport Lisa July 28, 2000 Lake County fire contained; homes believed safe The Sacramento Bee https://www.newspapers.com/clip/116179556/lake-county-fire-contained-homes-believ/ January 10, 2023 Newspapers.comPachenga Riverside 11,900 2000 July 29 2000 August 9Golden II Mono 2,150 2000 August 1 2000 August 8Caused by lightningChance Kern 1,200 2000 August 1 2000 August 5Caused by lightningKing Kern 3,243 2000 August 2 2000 August 9 Caused by lightningNorthfork San Benito 1,773 2000 August 3 2000 August 7Caused by equipment useRomero Merced 1,200 2000 August 9 2000 September 9Storrie Plumas 55,261 2000 August 17 2000 September 9Caused by Union Pacific railroad track repairsJuly 22, 2008 US government to announce $102m forest fire settlement with railroad The Guardian McClatchy Newspapers https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2008/jul/22/forests.usa January 10, 2023Hunter Mariposa 8,084 2000 August 27 2000 September 4Caused by equipment useHarris Santa Barbara 9,700 2000 September 13 2000 September 18Concow Butte 1,835 2000 September 19 2000 September 22Caused by equipment use; destroyed 16 structures, killed 1Weinstein Tehama 8,284 2000 September 29 2000 October 2Caused by an escaped controlled burnHidden Lake 4,500 2000 October 21 2000 October 27Caused by an electrical power system
