As a result of these weather patterns, most major fire events took place in Western Australia and South Australia. Some later significant fire activity occurred in Gippsland in eastern Victoria, an area which largely missed the rainfall that lead to the flooding in other parts of the state. thumb|Bush fire at Captain Creek, Queensland 2010 September WA On 24 September 2010, a fire started west Walpole at the Boronia Ridge sub-division. While most were relatively small and quickly contained, the worst of the fires, the Tostaree bushfires, spread rapidly, burning 8000 ha acres of thinly populated State forest, grassland, and farmland near the Princes Highway between Nowa Nowa and Newmerella, just west of Orbost. The fires quickly destroyed two houses (with several other houses being saved by fire crews), cut power to most of East Gippsland east of Nowa Nowa for several days, and caused the Princes Highway to be closed for almost two days, effectively isolating the region. The firefighting effort included two hundred Country Fire Authority firefighters, seven aircraft, and the Elvis air crane. Early speculation was that the fire had been started by clashing or fallen power lines caused by the strong winds.Weather offers reprieve in Gippsland blaze http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/02/3128272.htm?site=news https://web.archive.org/web/20121112080128/http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/02/3128272.htm?site=news 12 November 2012 ABC News 3 February 2011 2 February 2011 Milder weather conditions allowed the fire to be largely contained by 3 February, and the Princes Highway was reopened with a reduced speed limit.Crews confident of containing East Gippsland fire http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/03/3128518.htm?site=news https://web.archive.org/web/20110922100546/http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/03/3128518.htm?site=news 22 September 2011 ABC News 3 February 2011 3 February 2011 Further investigations suggested the fire had been started by smouldering tree roots from a lightning strike months earlier.Goswell Gus Crews work to contain East Gippsland blaze http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/03/3129350.htm?site=gippsland https://web.archive.org/web/20110922081348/http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/03/3129350.htm?site=gippsland 22 September 2011 ABC Gippsland Australian Broadcasting Corporation 3 February 2011 3 February 2011 WA On the night of 5 February 2011 a fire began to the east of Swan ValleyThe fire was known as the Red Hill fire by the fire and emergency services, and for convenience the West Australian (Tuesday 8th) page 9 – called it the Brigadoon Fire – it started on Toodyay Road in Gidegegannup area and proceeded west to the edge of the Darling Scarp above Campersic Road when a tree branch fell on an electrical transmission tower, resulting in hundreds of people being evacuated.http://www.inmycommunity.com.au/news-and-views/local-news/Swan-Valley-fire-caused-by-tree-branch/7582971/ Swan Valley Fire caused by tree branch Julian Wright 7 February 2011 7 February 2011 inMyCommunity Community Newspaper Group 27 July 2011 https://web.archive.org/web/20110727124903/http://www.inmycommunity.com.au/news-and-views/local-news/Swan-Valley-fire-caused-by-tree-branch/7582971/ By 7 February the fire had burnt through 1167 ha acre 0 with 150 firefighters tackling the blaze.
