This season was remarkable in the history of the club, because it was the first and only title that RC Lens won in French first division. The club also reached, for the third time in its history, the final of Coupe de France.April 2025 Daniel Leclercq lead the club in this season, which took place just before the World Cup hosted by France, and for which the Bollaert stadium hosted several games. Leclercq took control of the team early in the season after the previous season's deputy Roger Lemerre. This happened in 1997 to prevent a possible relegation to the second division. Leclercq set up a tactic based on offense and speed. The team relied on players present for several years, such as Jean-Guy Wallemme, a captain of the team, or the goalkeeper Guillaume Warmuz. Anto Drobnjak and Stéphane Ziani also played a central role in the team. Sixth in the mid-season, RC Lens took the championship lead after its victory in their 30th game of the season against league-leader FC Metz. Following that victory, RC Lens remained in first place through to the end of the season. Following this winning streak in the league, RC Lens lost in the final of Coupe de France and in the semifinals of the League Cup against the Paris Saint-Germain.April 2025 3 Players First-team squad Squad at end of seasonhttps://www.worldfootball.net/teams/te1539/rc-lens/squad/ RC Lens - Squad 1997/1998 worldfootball.netApril 2025 1 GK Guillaume Warmuz FRA 2 DF Éric Sikora FRA 3 DF Yoann Lachor FRA 4 DF Cyrille Magnier FRA 6 MF Hervé Arsène MAD 7 MF Mickaël Debève FRA 8 DF Jean-Guy Wallemme FRA captain 9 FW Anto Drobnjak FR Yugoslavia 10 MF Stéphane Ziani FRA 11 FW Tony Vairelles FRA 12 FW Wagneau Eloi HAI 13 MF Frédéric Déhu FRA 14 MF Wilson Oruma NGA 16 GK Cédric Berthelin FRA 17 MF Marc-Vivien Foé CMR 18 FW Philippe Brunel FRA 19 FW Vladimír Šmicer CZE 22 DF Xavier Méride FRA 24 DF José-Karl Pierre-Fanfan FRA 25 MF Romain Pitau FRA 26 DF Aboubacar Sankharé FRA 30 GK Christophe Marichez FRA Transfers In PlayerTransferred fromFeeJose-Karl Pierre-Fanfan USL DunkerqueFreeStephane ZianiBordeaux?Anto DrobnjakSC Bastia?Romain PitauB TeamFreeXavier MerideB Team FreeWilson OrumaAS NancyEnd of loanWagneau EloiAS NancyEnd of loan Competitions French Division 1 1997–98 French Division 1 League table RCL Results summary 12 4 1 32 9 9 1 7 23 21 9 May 1998 Ligue 1 July 2001 Results by round table b complete Round Ground H/A/H/A/H/H/A/H/A/H/A/H/H/A/H/A/H/A/H/A/A/H/A/H/A/H/A/H/A/A/H/A/H/A Result W/L/D/W/D/D/L/W/W/W/L/W/L/D/W/W/L/W/W/L/W/L/W/W/W/L/W/W/W/W/W/W/W/D Position 1/8/9/4/5/7/10/8/5/5/7/5/6/7/6/6/6/5/5/5/5/5/5/5/4/4/4/2/2/1/1/1/1/1 green2 Win yellow2 Draw red2 Loss Home Away gold green1 blue1 yellow1 red2 red1 Ligue 1 Coupe de France 1997–98 Coupe de France Round of 64 17 January 1998 17:10 CET (UTC+1) Lens 2–1 April 2025 Le Havre Vairelles 60 Déhu 90 Pouget 36 Stade Félix-Bollaert Lens 6,000 Franck Glochon W Round of 32 7 February 1998 19:30 CET (UTC+1) Épinal 0–2 yes April 2025 Lens Magnier 107 Vairelles 119 Stade de la Colombière Épinal 1,196 Bruno Derrien W Round of 16 28 February 1998 20:30 CET (UTC+1) UFC Argentan 1–3 April 2025 Lens Sauvage 70 Eloi 20 77 Déhu 90 Stade Michel d'Ornano Caen 18,927 Laurent Duhamel W Quarter-finals 21 March 1998 17:00 CET (UTC+1) Caen 1–2 April 2025 Lens Guerreiro 12 Šmicer 57 68 Stade Michel d'Ornano Caen 20,648 Philippe Kalt W Semi-finals 11 April 1998 17:00 CEST (UTC+2) Lens 2–0 April 2025 Lyon Ziani 24 90 Stade Félix-Bollaert Lens 38,269 Marc Batta W Final 2 May 1998 20:45 CEST (UTC+2) Paris Saint-Germain 2–1 April 2025 Lens Raí 24 Domi 30 Ducrocq 48 Simone 53 Déhu 56 Šmicer 83 Stade de France Saint-Denis 78,265 Gilles Veissière L Coupe de la Ligue 1997–98 Coupe de la Ligue Round of 32 5 January 1998 19:30 CET (UTC+1) Lens 1–0 April 2025 Stade Rennais Šmicer 21 Vairelles 77 Silvestre 60 Rossi 60 Stade Félix-Bollaert Lens 8,000 Dominique Fraise W Round of 16 31 January 1998 19:30 CET (UTC+1) Lens 1–0 April 2025 yes Chamois Niortais Drobnjak 118 Stade Félix-Bollaert Lens 21,956 Gilles Veissière W Quarter-finals 18 February 1998 16:00 CET (UTC+1) Sochaux 1–4 April 2025 Lens Bouger 39 39 Déhu 42 63 Brunel 73 88 Petereyns 76 o.g.
