The bowl's faith in LSU was rewarded when the Tigers stunned No. 2 Arkansas, 14–7, to stop the Razorbacks' winning streak at 22 games and deny Arkansas a second consecutive national championship. Schedule Destruction from Hurricane Betsy on September 10 put the season opener vs. Texas A&M in jeopardy. Repairs to the light towers, scoreboard and press box were made in time for the game to proceed as planned eight days later. LSU defeated rival Tulane by a 62-0 tally for the third time in eight seasons (1958 and 1961) in the Green Wave's final football game as a member of the Southeastern Conference. It was also LSU's third consecutive shutout of Tulane at Baton Rouge. 1965 AP September 18 8:00 pm w y 8 Texas A&M Tiger Stadium Baton Rouge, LA rivalry 10–0 68,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/lake-charles-american-press-lsu-cops-10/133740411/ Lake Charles American-Press LSU cops 10–0 win over A&M September 19, 1965 October 19, 2023 Newspapers.com September 25 8:00 pm w y 7 Rice Tiger Stadium Baton Rouge, LA 42–14 67,500 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-tyler-courier-times-tigers-claw-rice/133740534/ The Tyler Courier-Times Tigers claw Rice, 42–14 September 26, 1965 October 19, 2023 Newspapers.com October 2 1:00 pm l y 5 Florida Florida Field Gainesville, FL rivalry 7–14 47,592 https://www.newspapers.com/article/pensacola-news-journal-gators-upset-lsu/133740663/ Pensacola News Journal Gators upset LSU October 3, 1965 October 19, 2023 Newspapers.com October 9 7:00 pm w y y Miami (FL) Miami Orange Bowl Miami, FL 34–27 43,367 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-macon-telegraph-sophomore-powers-lsu/133740773/ The Macon Telegraph & News Sophomore powers LSU over Hurricanes, 34–27 October 10, 1965 October 19, 2023 Newspapers.com October 16 8:00 pm w y Kentucky Tiger Stadium Baton Rouge, LA 31–21 68,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-paducah-sun-vaunted-lsu-offense-buri/133739374/ The Paducah Sun-Democrat Vaunted LSU offense buries Kentucky 31–21 October 17, 1965 October 19, 2023 Newspapers.com October 23 8:00 pm w y 9 South Carolina Tiger Stadium Baton Rouge, LA 21–7 66,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/clarion-ledger-lsu-tigers-217-over-game/133740911/ The Clarion-Ledger LSU Tigers 21–7 over Gamecocks October 24, 1965 October 19, 2023 Newspapers.com October 30 2:00 pm l y 5 Ole Miss Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium Jackson, MS rivalry 0–23 46,616 https://www.newspapers.com/article/fort-lauderdale-news-mississippi-makes-s/133740995/ Fort Lauderdale News & Sun-Sentinel Mississippi makes shambles of LSU, 23–0 October 31, 1965 October 19, 2023 Newspapers.com November 6 1:15 pm l Alabama 5 Tiger Stadium Baton Rouge, LA rivalry NBC 7–31 58,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/fort-worth-star-telegram-alabama-rips-ls/133741136/ Fort Worth Star-Telegram Alabama rips LSU by 31–7 November 7, 1965 October 19, 2023 Newspapers.com November 13 8:00 pm w Mississippi State Tiger Stadium Baton Rouge, LA rivalry 37–20 60,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/arizona-daily-star-lsu-ends-streak/133686552/ The Arizona Daily Star LSU ends streak November 14, 1965 October 18, 2023 Newspapers.com November 20 8:00 pm w Tulane Tiger Stadium Baton Rouge, LA Battle for the Rag 62–0 65,000 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/86305376/lsu-dismantles-wave-620-then-takes-co/ The Shreveport Times LSU dismantles Wave, 62–0, then takes Cotton Bowl bid November 21, 1965 October 1, 2021 Newspapers.com January 1, 1966 12:30 pm w y y Arkansas 2 Cotton Bowl Dallas, TX Cotton Bowl, rivalry CBS 14–7 76,200 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-commercial-appeal-winning-streaks-ar/133741308/ The Commercial Appeal Winning streaks are Hobby January 2, 1966 October 18, 2023 Newspapers.com 1965 LSU Fighting Tigers Schedule and Results https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/louisiana-state/1965-schedule.html College Football @ Sports-Reference.com Sports Reference October 20, 2023 1965 Football Schedule https://lsusports.net/sports/fb/schedule/season/1965/ LSU Athletics October 20, 2023 2023 LSU Football Record Book https://lsusports.net/2023-lsu-football-media-guide/ LSU Athletics 99 October 20, 2023 References LSU Category:LSU Tigers football seasons Category:Cotton Bowl Classic champion seasons LSU Tigers football
