Alexander Vinokourov (11th) 2009 2011 The 2010 season for the AST 2010 cycling team began in January with the Tour Down Under and ended in October at the Giro di Lombardia. As a UCI ProTour team, they were automatically invited and obligated to send a squad to every ProTour event. Astana's 2010 season marked a great transition for the team, as went from the leadership of Johan Bruyneel to Yvon Sanquer. The team similarly saw many notable riders depart, including Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer, Andreas Klöden, and the rest of Astana's squad from the 2009 Tour de France save champion Alberto Contador. Most of these riders were part of Armstrong's new team in 2010, RadioShack 2010. Contador and Alexander Vinokourov, who returned from suspension late in the 2009 season, were the team's leaders in 2010. 2010 team roster Ages as of January 1, 2010 Assan Bazayev KAZ 2010 1 1 1981 2 22 Alberto Contador ESP 2010 1 1 1982 12 6 Allan Davis AUS 2010 1 1 1980 7 27 Scott Davis AUS 2010 1 1 1979 4 22 David de la Fuente ESP 2010 1 1 1981 5 4 Valeriy Dmitriyev KAZ 2010 1 1 1984 10 10 Alexsandr Dyachenko KAZ 2010 1 1 1983 10 17 Dmitry Fofonov KAZ 2010 1 1 1976 8 15 Enrico Gasparotto ITA 2010 1 1 1982 3 22 Maxim Gourov KAZ 2010 1 1 1979 1 30 Jesús Hernández ESP 2010 1 1 1981 9 28 Andriy Hryvko UKR 2010 1 1 1983 8 7 Maxim Iglinskiy KAZ 2010 1 1 1981 4 18 Valentin Iglinskiy KAZ 2010 1 1 1984 5 12 Josep Jufré ESP 2010 1 1 1975 8 5 Roman Kireyev KAZ 2010 1 1 1987 2 14 Daniel Navarro ESP 2010 1 1 1983 7 8 Yevgeniy Nepomnyachshiy KAZ 2010 1 1 1987 3 12 Benjamín Noval ESP 2010 1 1 1979 1 23 Óscar Pereiro ESP 2010 1 1 1977 8 3 Bolat Raimbekov KAZ 2010 1 1 1986 12 25 Sergey Renev KAZ 2010 1 1 1985 1 3 Mirko Selvaggi ITA 2010 1 1 1985 2 11 Gorazd Štangelj SLO 2010 1 1 1973 1 27 Paolo Tiralongo ITA 2010 1 1 1977 7 8 Alexander Vinokourov KAZ 2010 1 1 1973 9 16 Andrey Zeits KAZ 2010 8 29 1986 12 14 Riders who joined the team for the 2010 season Rider2009 teamAllan DavisQST 2009Scott DavisFly V AustraliaDavid de la FuenteFUJ 2009Dmitry Fofonovex-pro (C.A 2008, 2008)Enrico GasparottoLAM 2009Maxim GourovCarmiooro A StyleAndriy HryvkoISD 2009bValentin Iglinskiyneo-proYevgeniy NepomnyachshiyÓscar PereiroGCE 2009Mirko SelvaggiAMI 2009Gorazd ŠtangeljLIQ 2009bPaolo TiralongoLAM 2009Alexander Vinokourovex-pro (AST 2007, 2007) Riders who left the team during or after the 2009 season Rider2010 teamLance ArmstrongRadioShack 2010Janez BrajkovičRadioShack 2010Chris HornerRadioShack 2010Andreas KlödenRadioShack 2010Levi LeipheimerRadioShack 2010Steve MorabitoBMC 2010Dmitriy MuravyevRadioShack 2010Sérgio PaulinhoRadioShack 2010Yaroslav PopovychRadioShack 2010Grégory RastRadioShack 2010José Luis RubieraRadioShack 2010Michael SchärBMC 2010Tomas VaitkusRadioShack 2010Haimar ZubeldiaRadioShack 2010 One-day races Spring classics Maxim Iglinskiy won Montepaschi Strade Bianche in March, a rare spring season one-day win in the team's history. Valentin Iglinskiy, Dyachenko, and Gasparotto fell off the pace early in their ride, as did Kireyev with 3 kilometers left. This left only the minimum of five riders together, and in the last kilometer, Štangelj also fell off, and the remaining team members had to wait for him at the finish line. It also happened to be run on a day with very heavy rain, making the final kilometers of the course muddy and treacherous. After the overall contenders had stayed together for most of the stage, Nibali crashed on the first section of unpaved roads and needed a bike change. Vinokourov took the opportunity to put in an attack, and he and three others finished together well ahead of Nibali, giving Vinokourov the pink jersey again. This was the Giro's longest stage, and was again run on a very rainy day. In this stage, a group of approximately 50 riders broke away and gained considerable time on the peloton. Their biggest advantage was 20 minutes, and 40 of them were still together ahead of the peloton at the end of the stage, with the winner Evgeni Petrov still 13 minutes ahead. The teams of the overall contenders had been leading a chase until the day's last climb, when the chase stopped altogether and the time gap remained the same the rest of the way. Astana was one of the only teams who did not have a rider finish ahead of the peloton, and the result was Vinokourov again losing the pink jersey, this time to Richie Porte. Vinokourov finished in the top ten in several of the stages in the Giro's second half. Much as he did in stage 7, he made a selective break in a counterattack in stage 12, finishing fourth.
