Four of the first five players selected in the draft—quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Barry Sanders, linebacker Derrick Thomas, and cornerback Deion Sanders—would be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.https://www.profootballhof.com/timeline/1980/the-1989-nfl-draft/ Timeline Detail profootballhof.com April 10, 2019 Tackle Tony Mandarich, the only top five pick not inducted, is considered a draft bust.https://www.profootballhof.com/draft-timeline/ Draft Timeline - Football History profootballhof.com April 16, 2019 The 1989 NFL draft also helped set a major precedent, as Barry Sanders was selected with the third overall pick despite an NFL rule stating that collegiate juniors could not declare for the draft.https://www.nytimes.com/1990/02/16/sports/nfl-set-to-allow-juniors-in-draft.html N.F.L. Set To Allow Juniors In Draft Eskenazi Gerald February 16, 1990 The New York Times April 10, 2019 0362-4331 Since Barry Sanders was selected as a junior, it has become an expectation for top college players to declare for the draft after their junior season; the rule disallowing collegiate juniors in the NFL draft was lifted by the next draft. Sanders, the 1988 Heisman Trophy winner, was allowed to declare early when Oklahoma State was found guilty of numerous major NCAA rule violations and placed on five years' probation in January 1989. Another precedent the draft helped set was how players were invited to the actual draft room. First overall selection Aikman was represented by Leigh Steinberg, who went with his client to the draft finding he was the only player there. As years followed, more players began getting invited to the draft.Steinberg Leigh April 26, 2018 Behind The Scenes At Five Decades Of The NFL Draft https://www.forbes.com/sites/leighsteinberg/2018/04/26/draft/ April 16, 2019 Forbes Player selections 12 yes * Compensatory selection † Pro BowlerPlayers are identified as a Pro Bowler if they were selected for the Pro Bowl at any time in their career. ‡ Hall of FamerPlayers are identified as a Hall of Famer if they have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 1989 12 1 1 yes Dallas Cowboys Troy Aikman QB 1988 University of California, Los Angeles UCLA Bruins UCLA yes yes yes 1989 12 1 2 Green Bay Packers Tony Mandarich OT 1988 Michigan State University Michigan State Spartans Michigan State yes 1989 12 1 3 Detroit Lions Barry Sanders RB 1988 Oklahoma State University–Stillwater Oklahoma State Cowboys Oklahoma State yes yes 1988 Heisman Trophy winner54th Heisman Trophy winner http://www.heisman.com/winners/b-sanders88.php Heisman.com August 14, 2013 https://web.archive.org/web/20131004221321/http://www.heisman.com/winners/b-sanders88.php October 4, 2013 dead yes 1989 12 1 4 Kansas City Chiefs Derrick Thomas LB 1988 University of Alabama Alabama Crimson Tide Alabama yes yes yes 1989 12 1 5 Atlanta Falcons Deion Sanders CB 1988 Florida State University Florida State Seminoles Florida State yes yes yes 1989 12 1 6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Broderick Thomas LB 1988 University of Nebraska Nebraska Cornhuskers Nebraska yes 1989 12 1 7 Pittsburgh Steelers Tim Worley RB 1988 University of Georgia Georgia Bulldogs Georgia yes 1989 12 1 8 San Diego Chargers Burt Grossman DE 1988 University of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Panthers Pittsburgh yes 1989 12 1 9 Miami Dolphins Sammie Smith RB 1988 Florida State University Florida State Seminoles Florida State yes 1989 12 1 10 Phoenix Cardinals Eric Hill Eric Hill (American football) LB 1988 Louisiana State University LSU Tigers LSU yes 1989 12 1 11 Chicago Bears Donnell Woolford CB 1988 Clemson University Clemson Tigers Clemson yes from LA RaidersNo. 11: LA Raiders → Chicago (PD).
