The 1936 NFL draft was the first draft of National Football League (NFL). It took place on February 8, 1936, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.History: 1936 Draft http://www.profootballhof.com/history/general/draft/1936.aspx usurped https://web.archive.org/web/20100423132011/http://www.profootballhof.com/history/general/draft/1936.aspx April 23, 2010 June 30, 2012 Pro Football Hall of Famehttp://www.footballgeography.com/nfl-draft-sites/ NFL Draft Locations 2014-10-02 www.footballgeography.com 2014-10-23 https://web.archive.org/web/20150905090250/http://www.footballgeography.com/nfl-draft-sites/ 2015-09-05 dead Salomone Dan NFL Draft headed to Chicago in 2015 http://www.giants.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/NFL-Draft-headed-to-Chicago-in-2015/3ac322b1-3b4c-4a16-aba7-6e08d31b1756 June 3, 2015 New York Giants Giants.com October 2, 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20150930065327/http://www.giants.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/NFL-Draft-headed-to-Chicago-in-2015/3ac322b1-3b4c-4a16-aba7-6e08d31b1756 2015-09-30 dead The draft was instituted in an effort to end bidding wars among the league's teams by the arbitrary assignment of negotiating rights to amateur players. It was haphazardly decided that the last place team from the previous season would get the first selection, and the process would continue in reverse order of the standings. Under this structure the Philadelphia Eagles, who finished 1935 at 2–9, would select first.Chicago Bears Granted Option on Jay Berwanger https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=XaVQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=JCIEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3397,1514709&hl=en Milwaukee Journal D4 February 10, 1936 May 9, 2011 September 28, 2015 https://web.archive.org/web/20150928053441/https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=XaVQAAAAIBAJ&sjid=JCIEAAAAIBAJ&pg=3397,1514709&hl=en dead
This was the only draft to have nine rounds; the number increased to ten for the 1937 draft. The first player ever drafted, Jay Berwanger, who had previously been awarded the initial Heisman Trophy, never played in the NFL. His rights were traded by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Chicago Bears, as the Eagles felt they would be unable to meet Berwanger's reported demand of $1,000 per game. The Eagles received tackle Art Buss from the Bears in exchange for Berwanger's rights.Outstanding Pro Linemen Coming Here With Eagles https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=mcoxAAAAIBAJ&sjid=IOIFAAAAIBAJ&pg=4214,6401805&hl=en Reading Eagle 24 October 29, 1936 May 9, 2011 George Halas was unable to convince Berwanger to sign with the Bears.
