Incumbent mayor Vera Katz was re-elected to a third term. Portland uses a nonpartisan system for local elections, in which all voters are eligible to participate. All candidates are listed on the ballot without any political party affiliation. All candidates meeting the qualifications competed in a blanket primary election on May 16, 2000. Because Katz received a majority of the vote in the primary, no runoff election in November was necessary. Results Katz defeated Jake Oken-Berg, a 19-year-old student and political unknown who received a surprising 27% of the vote and almost forced a runoff, as well as 15 other candidates, who, combined, received approximately 18% of the vote.http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/anna_griffin/index.ssf/2011/06/max_brumm_cant_win_portland_ma.html Max Brumm can't win Portland mayor's race, but candidates could take a cue Griffin, Anna The Oregonian (OregonLive.com) June 19, 2011 January 7, 2017https://www.blueoregon.com/author/jake-oken-berg/ Jake Oken-Berg BlueOregon January 7, 2017https://multco.us/elections/may-16-2000-city-portland-mayor May 16, 2000 - City of Portland Mayor Multnomah County, Oregon 2000 January 7, 2017 Portland mayoral primary election, 2000https://www.portlandoregon.gov/auditor/article/5443 2000 Primary Election - Official Results Portland City Auditor January 7, 2017 Vera Katz (incumbent) Nonpartisan candidate 70,303 55.06 Jake Oken-Berg Nonpartisan candidate 34,125 26.73 John David Ernsberger Nonpartisan candidate 5,105 4.00 Bruce Broussard Nonpartisan candidate 4,860 3.81 Jason Fleming Nonpartisan candidate 2,163 1.69 Scott Conway Nonpartisan candidate 1,836 1.44 Blake Byrne Nonpartisan candidate 1,750 1.37 Charlie Gilbert Nonpartisan candidate 1,346 1.05 Virginia Davis Nonpartisan candidate 1,319 1.03 Shaun J.
