Season summary In the 2001–02 season, after a mediocre start with Barnsley reaching eleventh by mid-September, results started to go downhill and the team found themselves hovering around the relegation zone. Following a 3–1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, Spackman and coach Derek Fazackerley were both sacked.Barnsley sack Spackman https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/b/barnsley/1619405.stm BBC Sport 25 October 2001 30 January 2014 Caretaker manager Glyn Hodges won his first game in charge 3–2 against West Bromwich Albion, however two 3–0 defeats followed against Manchester City and Watford. Then Rochdale boss, Steve Parkin, was appointed full-time manager on 9 November.Barnsley confirm Parkin deal https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/b/barnsley/1646587.stm BBC Sport 9 November 2001 30 January 2014 Barnsley then went on a twelve-game unbeaten league run from December until mid-February which saw them pull clear of the relegation zone, but from then on results went downhill and Barnsley were dragged back into the mire, with Barnsley's away form being particularly poor and were pretty much reliant upon home victories to get valuable points. Despite a battling effort it came down to the final home game of the season, with Barnsley needing a victory against Norwich City to stave off relegation. On 13 April, Barnsley lost 2–0, and were relegated outside the top two flights of English football for the first time in over twenty years.Barnsley 0-2 Norwich https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/1923721.stm BBC Sport 13 April 2002 30 January 2014 Final league table 2001–02 Football League First Division y BAR Results Barnsley's score comes firstBarnsley 2001-2002 Results http://www.statto.com/football/teams/barnsley/2001-2002/results live https://web.archive.org/web/20140202095158/http://www.statto.com/football/teams/barnsley/2001-2002/results 2014-02-02 statto.com Legend WinDrawLoss Football League First Division DateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceScorers 11 August 2001 Bradford CityA0–416,367 18 August 2001 Nottingham ForestH2–114,203Gallen, Rankin 25 August 2001 GillinghamA0–38,292 27 August 2001 Rotherham UnitedH1–115,552Dyer 1 September 2001 Grimsby TownA0–16,173 8 September 2001 Stockport CountyH2–211,192Sheron, Briggs (own goal) 15 September 2001 Crewe AlexandraH2–010,976Gorré, Neil 18 September 2001 MillwallA1–310,021Dyer 22 September 2001 Crystal PalaceA0–115,433 25 September 2001 Coventry CityH1–111,692Dyer 28 September 2001 PortsmouthH1–411,660Barnard (pen) 13 October 2001 Birmingham CityH1–311,910Sand 20 October 2001 BurnleyA3–314,690Morgan, Lumsdon (pen), Barnard 24 October 2001 Sheffield WednesdayA1–321,008Gallen 28 October 2001 West Bromwich AlbionH3–212,490Dyer (2), Lumsdon (pen) 31 October 2001 Manchester CityH0–315,159 3 November 2001 WatfordA0–313,964 8 November 2001 Preston North EndA2–219,042Barnard, Neil 17 November 2001 WimbledonH1–111,088Dyer 24 November 2001 Norwich CityA1–217,333Barker 27 November 2001 Wolverhampton WanderersA1–419,231Barker 2 December 2001 Sheffield WednesdayH3–016,714Morgan, Sheron (2) 8 December 2001 WalsallH4–112,509Sheron (2), Dyer, Donovan 14 December 2001 Sheffield UnitedA1–117,858Sheron 22 December 2001 GillinghamH4–111,965Lumsdon, Barnard, Dyer, G Jones 26 December 2001 Stockport CountyA3–16,885Sheron, Palmer (own goal), Morgan 29 December 2001 Rotherham UnitedA1–19,737Swailes (own goal) 1 January 2002 Grimsby TownH0–013,325 12 January 2002 Nottingham ForestA0–018,190 19 January 2002 Bradford CityH3–313,856Lumsdon (pen), Sheron (2) 29 January 2002 Wolverhampton WanderersH1–013,825Sheron 2 February 2002 PortsmouthA4–412,756Lumsdon (2, 1 pen), Barker, Sheron 9 February 2002 BurnleyH1–114,411Barnard 16 February 2002 Birmingham CityA0–119,208 23 February 2002 Coventry CityA0–415,092 26 February 2002 Crystal PalaceH1–411,207Dyer 2 March 2002 MillwallH1–111,816Lumsdon (pen) 5 March 2002 Crewe AlexandraA0–26,258 9 March 2002 Sheffield UnitedH1–115,430Dyer 16 March 2002 WalsallA1–27,495Dyer 23 March 2002 WatfordH2–012,449Dyer, Barnard (pen) 30 March 2002 West Bromwich AlbionA1–323,167Barnard (pen) 1 April 2002 Preston North EndH2–114,188Gorré, Dyer 6 April 2002 Manchester CityA1–533,628Dyer 13 April 2002 Norwich CityH0–218,803 21 April 2002 WimbledonA1–05,379Sheron FA Cup 2001–02 FA Cup +RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersR35 January 2002 Blackburn RoversH1–112,314BarnardR3R16 January 2002 Blackburn RoversA1–310,203Dyer League Cup 2001–02 Football League Cup +RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersR121 August 2001 Halifax TownH2–05,418Tinkler, DyerR211 September 2001 Colchester UnitedA3–13,442Dyer (2), L JonesR39 October 2001 Newcastle UnitedH0–114,493 Squad https://www.footballsquads.co.uk/eng/2001-2002/d1/barnsley.htm FootballSquads -
