Retrieved 2014-9-4. The earthquake had a moment magnitude (w) of 8.5 and was followed by an w 7.8 event seven days later."Rupture process of the Great 1963 Kurile Islands Earthquake Sequence: Asperity interaction and multiple event rupture" SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System. Retrieved 2014-9-5. Both earthquakes triggered tsunamis that were observed around the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. Tectonic setting The Kuril Islands form part of the island arc formed above the subduction zone, where the Pacific plate is being subducted beneath the North American plate. This convergent boundary has been the site of many large megathrust earthquakes, including the second largest earthquake ever recorded. Damage No damage, deaths, or injuries were recorded for these two earthquakes or their associated tsunamis. Characteristics Earthquake The megathrust earthquake ruptured a 250 km-long section of the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench which based on pulses of shock registered on seismometer records, found to have contained three particular areas of asperity with high amounts of slip inside the torn subduction interface, each roughly 50 km in length and Mw 7.5 in energy.Ruff L. The tsunami was also observed in Canada, Japan, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, California, and on many islands across the northern Pacific Ocean. The tsunami associated with the October 20 event was larger in the nearby area, with a maximum recorded run-up of 15 m at Urup, but was only observed in the western part of the northern Pacific.http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/nndc/struts/results?bt_0=1963&st_0=1963&type_17=EXACT&query_17=None+Selected&op_12=eq&v_12=RUSSIA&type_12=Or&query_14=None+Selected&type_3=Like&query_3=&st_1=45&bt_2=&st_2=&bt_1=&bt_4=7.4&st_4=&bt_5=&st_5=&bt_6=&st_6=&bt_7=&st_7=&bt_8=&st_8=&bt_9=&st_9=&bt_10=&st_10=&type_11=Exact&query_11=&type_16=Exact&query_16=&display_look=1&t=101650&s=1&submit_all=Search+Database https://archive.today/20121214112405/http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/nndc/struts/results?bt_0=1963&st_0=1963&type_17=EXACT&query_17=None+Selected&op_12=eq&v_12=RUSSIA&type_12=Or&query_14=None+Selected&type_3=Like&query_3=&st_1=45&bt_2=&st_2=&bt_1=&bt_4=7.4&st_4=&bt_5=&st_5=&bt_6=&st_6=&bt_7=&st_7=&bt_8=&st_8=&bt_9=&st_9=&bt_10=&st_10=&type_11=Exact&query_11=&type_16=Exact&query_16=&display_look=1&t=101650&s=1&submit_all=Search+Database dead December 14, 2012 Search results page showing the two events NGDC 12 March 2010 See also 1994 Kuril Islands earthquake 2006 Kuril Islands earthquake 2007 Kuril Islands earthquake List of earthquakes in 1963 List of earthquakes in Japan List of earthquakes in Russia References External links 873239 Kuril Islands Kuril Islands earthquake Category:1960s tsunamis Category:October 1963 in Asia Category:Megathrust earthquakes in the Soviet Union Category:Earthquakes of the Shōwa era Category:Megathrust earthquakes in Japan Category:Tsunamis in Russia Category:Tsunami earthquakes Category:Earthquakes in the Russian Far East
