The club was established in 1996 when two of the most successful basketball associations, Alvik BK (established 1956) and the South YMCA Basketball (established 1949), collaborated to form 08 Stockholm. The reason for the name of "Human Rights" is because of the club's active social commitment to using basketball as a tool to work against racism, for social inclusion and to educate their players and leaders in the club's core values.http://old.fryshuset.se/fryshusandan/verksamheter.aspx?pageID=14 08 Stockholm Human Rights Basket Fryshuset.se sv https://web.archive.org/web/20090421234744/http://old.fryshuset.se/fryshusandan/verksamheter.aspx?pageID=14 2009-04-21 dead 2009-08-16 http://www.svenskidrott.se/Organisation.asp?WCI=wiKlubbKassaNews&WCU=226555 08 Stockholm Human Rights BBK - Basket Svenskidrott.se sv https://web.archive.org/web/20050905101054/http://svenskidrott.se/Organisation.asp?WCI=wiKlubbKassaNews&WCU=226555 2005-09-05 dead 2009-08-16 Since their inception in 1996–97, the club has been very successful with both their men's and women's teams winning the league championship in 2001.
