Led by sixth-year head coach Bill Mallory, the Hoosiers compiled an overall record of 5–6 with a mark of 3–5 in conference play, tying for sixth place the Big Ten. It was Indiana's first losing season since 1985. The team played home games at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana. In the battle for the Old Oaken Bucket, Purdue beat Indiana. On November 24, Anthony Thompson was the top vote-getter and the only repeat selection on the 1989 Walter Camp All-America team. Thompson finished the season with 1,793 yards and 24 touchdowns. On December 2, a chorus of boos was heard throughout the Hoosier Dome during the Indiana–Kentucky basketball game when Andre Ware of the Houston Cougars was announced as the 55th recipient of the Heisman Trophy. Thompson finished second.http://www.collegefootballhistory.com/hoosiers/history.htm Indiana Hoosiers Football History - College Football 2015-12-12 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20130901135850/http://www.collegefootballhistory.com/hoosiers/history.htm 2013-09-01 Schedule 1989 AP Eastern September 9 1:30 pm l y y Kentucky Commonwealth Stadium Lexington, KY rivalry 14–17 58,216 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-indianapolis-star-kentuckys-last-st/135060534/ The Indianapolis Star Kentucky's last stand gives IU first loss September 10, 1989 November 12, 2023 Newspapers.com September 16 2:00 pm w y Missouri Memorial Stadium Bloomington, IN 24–7 48,106 https://www.newspapers.com/article/tulsa-world-indiana-thompson-roll-past/174125808/ Tulsa World Indiana, Thompson roll past Missouri, 24–7 September 17, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com September 30 2:00 pm w y Toledo Memorial Stadium Bloomington, IN 32–12 43,501 https://www.newspapers.com/article/palladium-item-hoosiers-down-rockets/174100902/ Palladium-Item Hoosiers down Rockets October 1, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com October 7 2:00 pm w Northwestern Memorial Stadium Bloomington, IN 43–11 47,845 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-times-mail-iu-balancing-act-topples/174193227/ Sunday Herald-Times IU balancing act topples NU October 8, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com October 14 1:30 pm l y Ohio State Ohio Stadium Columbus, OH 31–35 89,750 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-courier-journal-hoosiers-fail-to-gra/174183865/ The Courier-Journal Hoosiers fail to grab free kick as Buckeyes survive 35–31 October 15, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com October 21 2:00 pm w y Minnesota Memorial Stadium Bloomington, IN 28–18 51,069 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-kokomo-tribune-thompson-has-his-best/174185120/ The Kokomo Tribune Thompson has his best day October 22, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com October 28 12:00 pm l y Michigan 5 Michigan Stadium Ann Arbor, MI ABC 10–38 105,989 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-houston-post-59-for-thompson-but-w/174180954/ The Houston Post 59 for Thompson, but 'W' for Michigan October 29, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com November 4 12:30 pm l Michigan State Memorial Stadium Bloomington, IN rivalry ESPN 20–51 51,567 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-grand-rapids-press-msu-wallops-india/174183248/ The Grand Rapids Press MSU wallops Indiana November 5, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com November 11 2:00 pm w y Wisconsin Camp Randall Stadium Madison, WI 45–17 37,442 https://www.newspapers.com/article/wausau-daily-herald-thompson-gains-377-y/174193529/ Wausau Daily Herald Thompson gains 377 yards vs. Wisconsin November 12, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com November 18 3:30 pm l y Illinois 12 Memorial Stadium Champaign, IL rivalry ABC 28–41 53,368 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-republic-by-george-iu-whipped/174182482/ The Republic By George, IU whipped November 19, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com November 25 2:00 pm l Purdue Memorial Stadium Bloomington, IN Old Oaken Bucket 14–15 47,502 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-star-press-boilers-bag-the-bucket/174193695/ The Muncie Star Boilers bag the Bucket November 26, 1989 June 9, 2025 Newspapers.com 1989 Indiana Hoosiers Schedule and Results https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/indiana/1989-schedule.html College Football @ Sports-Reference.com Sports Reference December 28, 2023 1989 Football Schedule https://iuhoosiers.com/sports/football/schedule/1989 Indiana University December 28, 2023 Indiana Football 2023 Record Book https://static.iuhoosiers.com/custompages/pdf/fb/2023/23-FB-Record_Book_Full.pdf Indiana University 16 December 28, 2023 1989 Homecoming Indiana Arbutus (yearbook) October 14, 2015 http://www.static.getsnworks.com/ids/arbutus/1990/ dead https://web.archive.org/web/20160421201113/http://static.getsnworks.com/ids/arbutus/1990/ April 21, 2016 Game summaries At Kentucky October 2022 Missouri October 2022 Toledo October 2022 Northwestern October 2022 At Ohio State Indiana Hoosiers 2; text-align:center collapsed Indiana Hoosiers (3–1) at Ohio State Buckeyes (2–2) October 14 1:30 p.m. Indiana 0 14 7 10 Ohio St 7 21 7 0 Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio 89,750 Sunny, 75 F C John Nealon Box Score First quarter OSU – Jim Palmer 2-yard pass from Greg Frey (Pat O'Morrow kick), 8:47.
