Each tie in the knockout phase, apart from the final, was played over two legs, with each team playing one leg at home. The team that scored more goals on aggregate over the two legs advanced to the next round. If the aggregate score was level, the away goals rule would be applied, i.e. the team that scored more goals away from home over the two legs advanced. If away goals were also equal, then thirty minutes of extra time would be played. The away goals rule would be again applied after extra time, i.e. if there were goals scored during extra time and the aggregate score was still level, the visiting team would advance by virtue of more away goals scored. If no goals were scored during extra time, the tie would be decided by penalty shoot-out. In the final, which was played as a single match, if scores were level at the end of normal time, extra time would be played, followed by penalty shoot-out if scores remained tied. The mechanism of the draws for each round was as follows: In the draw for the round of 16, the eight group winners were seeded, and the eight group runners-up were unseeded. The seeded teams were drawn against the unseeded teams, with the seeded teams hosting the second leg. Teams from the same group or the same association could not be drawn against each other. In the draws for the quarter-finals onwards, there were no seedings, and teams from the same group or the same association could be drawn against each other. On 17 July 2014, the UEFA emergency panel ruled that Ukrainian and Russian clubs would not be drawn against each other "until further notice" due to the political unrest between the countries.http://www.uefa.org/about-uefa/news/newsid=2124836.html Emergency Panel decisions UEFA.org 17 July 2014 Qualified teams GroupWinners(Seeded in round of 16 draw)Runners-up(Unseeded in round of 16 draw)AESP Real MadridFRA 1974 Paris Saint-GermainBGER VfL WolfsburgNED PSV EindhovenCESP Atlético MadridPOR BenficaDENG Manchester CityITA JuventusEESP BarcelonaITA RomaFGER Bayern MunichENG ArsenalGENG ChelseaUKR Dynamo KyivHRUS Zenit Saint PetersburgBEL Gent Bracket numbered 2 1 40 20 y y Round of 16 Quarter-finals Semi-finals Final FRA 1974 Paris Saint-Germain 2 2 4 ENG Chelsea 1 1 2 UKR Dynamo Kyiv 1 0 1 ENG Manchester City 3 0 3 BEL Gent 2 0 2 GER VfL Wolfsburg 3 1 4 ITA Roma 0 0 0 ESP Real Madrid 2 2 4 ENG Arsenal 0 1 1 ESP Barcelona 2 3 5 NED PSV Eindhoven 0 0 0 (7) ESP Atlético Madrid 0 0 0 (8) ITA Juventus 2 2 4 GER Bayern Munich 2 4 6 POR Benfica 1 2 3 RUS Zenit Saint Petersburg 0 1 1 FRA 1974 Paris Saint-Germain 2 0 2 ENG Manchester City 2 1 3 GER VfL Wolfsburg 2 0 2 ESP Real Madrid 0 3 3 ESP Barcelona 2 0 2 ESP Atlético Madrid 1 2 3 GER Bayern Munich 1 2 3 POR Benfica 0 2 2 ENG Manchester City 0 0 0 ESP Real Madrid 0 1 1 ESP Atlético Madrid (a) 1 1 2 GER Bayern Munich 0 2 2 28 May – Milan ESP Real Madrid 1 (5) ESP Atlético Madrid 1 (3) Round of 16 The draw was held on 14 December 2015.
