The Free Democratic Party retained its majority in the National Council.Elections to the National Council 1848–1917: Distribution of seats by party or political orientation https://web.archive.org/web/20150923230855/http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/fr/index/themen/17/22/lexi.Document.137139.xls 2015-09-23 BFS Electoral system The 189 members of the National Council were elected in 49 single- and multi-member constituencies using a three-round system. Candidates had to receive a majority in the first or second round to be elected; if it went to a third round, only a plurality was required. Voters could cast as many votes as there were seats in their constituency. There was one seat for every 20,000 citizens, with seats allocated to cantons in proportion to their population.Dieter Nohlen & Philip Stöver (2010) Elections in Europe: A data handbook, p1886 9783832956097 The elections were held under the new Federal law concerning the constituencies for the election of National Council members of passed on 23 June 1911. Following the 1910 census the number of seats was increased from 167 to 189, although the number of constituencies remained the same. Bern and Zürich both gained three seats, Aargau, St. Gallen and Vaud gained two, whilst, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Fribourg, Geneva, Graubünden, Lucerne, Neuchâtel, Solothurn, Ticino and Thurgau all gained one. A referendum on introducing proportional representation had been held in October 1910, and although it was approved by a majority of cantons, it was narrowly rejected by voters. Results Voter turnout was highest in Aargau at 83.1% (higher than the 80% in Schaffhausen, where voting was compulsory) and lowest in Obwalden at 21.1%. 300px Free Democratic Party 198300 115 +10 Social Democratic Party 80050 15 +8 Catholic People's Party 76726 38 +4 Liberal Centre 27062 14 –2 Liberal Party of Switzerland Democratic Group 12610 6 +1 Circle of Rhine Party 6122 2 1 New Others 0 0 36840 +22 830120 Mackie & Rose,Thomas T Mackie & Richard Rose (1991) The International Almanac of Electoral History, Macmillan BFS (seats) By constituency ConstituencySeatsPartySeatswonElected membersZürich 17Free Democratic Party7*Robert Billeter Emil Zürcher Alfred Frey Jakob Lutz Friedrich Fritschi Walter Bissegger Johann Jakob HauserZürich 25Social Democratic Party5*Herman Greulich Paul Pflüger Robert Seidel Johannes Sigg Robert GrimmZürich 35Free Democratic Party3*Werner Weber Heinrich Hess Karl August KollerLiberal Centre2*Johann Jakob Abegg Johann Rudolf AmslerZürich 45Free Democratic Party4*Hans Sträuli Friedrich Ottiker Eduard Sulzer Julius GuyerSocial Democratic Party1Friedrich StuderZürich 53Free Democratic Party3*Johann Konrad Hörni Jakob Walder David RinggerBern 66Free Democratic Party6*Robert Stucki Emil Lohner Arnold Gottlieb Bühler Johann Jakob Rebmann Johann Friedrich Michel Hermann SchüpbachBern 77Free Democratic Party4*Johann Hirter Johann Jenny Eugen Huber Jakob ScheideggerLiberal Centre2*Gustav König Ernst WyssSocial Democratic Party1Gustav MüllerBern 84Free Democratic Party4*Fritz Bühlmann Johann Jakob Schär Fritz Zumstein Friedrich MinderBern 94Free Democratic Party3*Arnold Gugelmann Michael Hofer Friedrich BuriSocial Democratic Party1August RikliBern 105Free Democratic Party4*Alfred Moll Jakob Freiburghaus Eduard Will Karl ScheurerSocial Democratic Party1Johann NäherBern 113Free Democratic Party3*Virgile Rossel Albert Gobat Albert LocherBern 123Catholic Right2*Joseph Choquard Ernest DaucourtFree Democratic Party1Henri SimoninLucerne 133Free Democratic Party3*Peter Knüsel Otto Sidler Hermann HellerLucerne 142Catholic Right3*Anton Erni Josef Anton BalmerLucerne 153Catholic Right2*Franz Moser-Schär Heinrich Walther Dominik FellmannUri 161Catholic Right1Josef FurrerSchwyz 173Catholic Right2*Anton von Hettlingen Josef Anton Ferdinand BüelerFree Democratic Party1Martin SteineggerObwalden 181Catholic Right1Peter Anton MingNidwalden 191Catholic Right1Karl NiederbergerGlarus 202Democratic Group2*Eduard Blumer David LeglerZug 211Free Democratic Party1Hermann StadlinFribourg 222Free Democratic Party1Hermann LiechtiCatholic Right1Eugène DescheneauxFribourg 235Catholic Right4*Max de Diesbach Charles de Wuilleret Alphonse Théraulaz Eugène GrandFree Democratic Party1A.-F.-L.
